WaldorfMusicChannel dives deep into the Microwave 1 Plug-in Version 2, a software revival of their iconic hybrid synth. With CTO Rolf Wöhrmann at the helm, the video showcases how wavetable synthesis and analog-style filters are brought to the DAW world, highlighting the balance of vintage character and modern workflow enhancements. We explore the architecture, from polyphony upgrades to the new preset browser and multi-part editing, all designed to fit the needs of today’s digital musicians. The focus is on creative sequencing, performance features, and the evolving interface that aims to streamline complex patch creation without sacrificing the original Microwave’s sonic DNA.

WaldorfMusicChannel’s Microwave 1 Plug-in v2: Hybrid Synthesis Reimagined
Hybrid Synthesis for the DAW Era
The Microwave 1 Plug-in is introduced as Waldorf’s digital reincarnation of their classic hybrid synth, combining the signature wavetable synthesis with analog filter emulation directly for modern DAWs. Rolf Wöhrmann begins by acknowledging the two-pronged update strategy: free workflow upgrades and a paid 2.0 sound engine expansion. This sets the stage for a product that respects its analog-digital lineage but is tailored for contemporary production environments.
From the outset, the focus is clear—preserving the character of the original Microwave while leveraging today’s digital flexibility. The plugin environment allows for deep integration with workstation setups, making hybrid synthesis accessible not only to hardware enthusiasts but also to those building entirely digital rigs. Waldorf positions the plug-in as both a tool for nostalgia and a platform for modern creative exploration.
Expanded Polyphony: The Voice Card Approach
Version 2’s most significant architectural leap is the expansion from 8 to up to 32 voices, implemented via a virtual ‘voice card’ system. This mirrors the original hardware’s modular voice board concept, adding voices in blocks of eight to maintain the micro-timing quirks and liveliness that defined the hardware’s sound. Rather than simply increasing the voice count digitally, Waldorf simulates the actual PCB stacking, preserving the subtle timing variations and controller interactions between cards.
The workflow impact is substantial: users can dynamically allocate more voice cards for complex multis or polyphonic arpeggiators, scaling the instrument’s resources as needed. The approach is not just about raw polyphony, but about emulating the original’s architectural behavior within a software environment, aiming to keep the sonic DNA intact even as the instrument evolves for current production demands.

Round Robin and Random Robin: Creative Trigger Modes

"So if I'm going for a round robin, so each of the instruments are triggered in order."

Version 2 introduces new playback modes—Round Robin and Random Robin—that radically expand sound generation and sequencing flexibility. These modes allow layered or multi-part patches to cycle or randomly distribute notes and triggers across instrument parts, creating evolving textures and dynamic performances. The demonstration highlights how each instrument layer can be triggered in order or at random, reminiscent of features in Waldorf’s Iridium and Quantum lines.
Adding to this, the polyphonic arpeggiator—available both globally and per part—enables intricate, polyrhythmic structures. Users can set individual arpeggiator algorithms, step lengths, and modes across parts, leading to complex interlocking patterns. The combination of advanced trigger modes and flexible arpeggiation positions the Microwave 1 Plug-in as a deeply creative tool for both studio sequencing and live improvisation.
Preset Browser: Navigating the Sonic Archive
A major usability upgrade comes in the form of the completely redesigned preset browser. Users can now efficiently navigate classic factory banks, multi-sounds, user banks, and newly commissioned soundsets, including fresh material from Chuck Zwicky. The interface supports favorites tagging, quick selection, and deletion from favorites without affecting the source preset, supporting both exploration and curation workflows.
The search function is a standout, enabling rapid retrieval of sounds by name or keyword, with results spanning all banks. There are also direct operations on user presets—copying, renaming, duplicating, deleting, and even exporting via the file system. The browser adds practical value for those managing large sound libraries or seeking instant recall during sessions, finally addressing a pain point from earlier versions.
Workflow Enhancements: Undo, Multi-Edit, and Simultaneous Part Control
Editing is streamlined with the addition of multi-level undo/redo, accessible via a hoverable history that lists all recent parameter changes. This allows users to non-destructively experiment with patch edits, rolling back or reapplying complex chains of tweaks—an essential feature for deep synthesis work. Multi-editing of instrument parts becomes far more intuitive; users can now adjust parameters across all parts simultaneously with a shift-key gesture or by toggling a dedicated mode, saving time when sculpting layered sounds.
Importantly, Waldorf also introduces relative and absolute multi-editing: edits can either set all parts to the same value or preserve inter-part relationships. This is particularly useful for nuanced control over parameters like filter cutoff or envelope times across a multi, and the undo system logs these as single, coherent steps. The workflow improvements are designed to support fast experimentation and intricate sound design without menu-diving or repetitive parameter entry.

"If I just hover over the undo, I see all my editing steps."
