Roland TR-1000 Firmware 1.50 Expands Note Sequencing and Audio Routing

The free firmware 1.50 update gives Roland’s TR-1000 Rhythm Creator new tools for melodic sequencing, effects processing and audio routing. Keyboard Mode joins Reverse Pan Delay, 50 additional FM instruments and settings that preserve effects across kit changes. Several interface refinements also address everyday operation. The emphasis is on more direct note entry, smoother transitions and better separation of analogue connections from USB recording.

Reverse Pan Delay puts echoes in motion

An echo running backwards while moving across the stereo field provides a fitting introduction to Roland’s free firmware 1.50 update for the TR-1000 Rhythm Creator. The official walkthrough of 21 October 2026 calls the effect Reverse Pan Delay, while the support page uses Rev Pan Delay. According to the presentation, the delay and panning LFO have independent timing controls. The MFX need not process the entire kit: Roland also shows selected tracks being assigned through their routing. This allows the movement to be focused on particular instruments rather than applying the same treatment to the whole beat.

A historical request meets a new sequencer option

The Midlife Synthesist – The absence of a chromatic mode is something that's been mentioned by a lot of other reviewers, so if a firmware update is on the way, I would expect this to be high on the list of things to get in here.

The more substantial workflow change lies in note entry. A historical reference comes from The Midlife Synthesist’s video of 28 February 2026, published before version 1.50. He criticised the lack of a chromatic mode and demonstrated setting different pitches for a sawtooth oscillator individually. His suggestion that a future update should address the issue was an expectation, not a description of an existing function. NOTE data and Keyboard Mode now tackle this area of operation. However, that does not mean every previous restriction has disappeared. Roland specifies compatibility with particular sound generators, rather than presenting the functions as universal for all sounds.

Playing notes from the step buttons

For compatible GENs, version 1.50 introduces the NOTE step parameter and KEYBOARD play option. Roland’s video shows the step buttons acting as a keyboard for both playback and recording. Notes can be performed in real time and recorded using Instrument Record. This offers a more immediate connection between a musical idea and its sequence than setting each pitch separately. Root Step is also demonstrated as a way to shift the keyboard’s position. The row of buttons does not replace a full-sized keyboard, but it gains a definite role when creating bass lines and other pitched parts within the rhythm machine.

More precise choices for analogue and USB audio

RolandChannel – We can route any track or the external input through the analog effects, MFX, or bypassing them completely.

It is worth separating general routing capabilities from the new settings. In the walkthrough, Roland explains that tracks and the external input can be sent through the analogue effects or MFX, or routed around them. Newly documented options include MIX+ANA and ANALOG for the AFX section’s FX-ROUTE parameter. ANALOG sends the AFX signal only to its designated output. MIX ONLY is also added to INDV OUT. This suppresses the track signal at its individual analogue output while leaving its digital audio output available over USB. Analogue cabling and USB recording can therefore be organised with greater independence.

Kit changes without cutting off the effects

KEEP KIT EFX & EXT IN addresses the point where an arrangement can reveal an awkward seam: changing kits. When the setting is active, the current Ext In, Reverb, Delay, Mod, MFX and AFX settings are retained across the change. Roland says reverb, delay and the external input signal remain uninterrupted. This should be understood as preservation of the existing effect and input settings, not an unrestricted merging of every aspect of two kits. Within that scope, it is a useful addition for continuous transitions, allowing an effect tail to carry on rather than necessarily ending with the outgoing kit.

Additional effects, FM instruments and modulation

The effect additions extend beyond Reverse Pan Delay. Roland’s update history also names Roll, Roll 2 and SBF-325 as new MFX types, with SBF-325 appearing as an IFX as well. Their musical results cannot be judged from the list alone. More concretely, the update brings 50 FM instruments from the TR-8S instrument library into the TR-1000, and all FM GENs gain a COARSE parameter. The modulation section can now address PAN for Layers A and B, plus TIME for the IFX delay. That delay parameter can also be assigned through KNOB ASSIGN, adding another route to direct control.

Interface refinements with practical consequences

Roland also lists clearer encoder assignments in Song Mode, a larger BPM readout with tempo-nudge indicators, and a graphical display of the EQ type in the filter. TUNE and DECAY OFFSET are shown as inverted bar graphics above the respective GEN parameter. Setting PATTERN SELECT MODE to MANUAL means an encoder-selected pattern is only applied after pressing ENTER. Sample Auto Adjust changes the level of imported samples to suit the target preset category. Meanwhile, AUTO TRACK SELECT can switch tracks automatically when step buttons are pressed during INST PLAY/REC. These are practical changes to selection, orientation and preparation rather than headline sound features.

A free update with backup precautions

Roland’s support lists System Program 1.50 for October 2026; the official explanation video was published on 21 October. Installation is free and can also be carried out through the TR-1000 app, according to support. The documented USB procedure requires a drive formatted in the TR-1000, with a maximum capacity of 64 GB. Roland recommends backing up first, estimating around 20 minutes for the backup and roughly three minutes for the update. The power supply must not be interrupted during installation. The documented gains centre on melodic input, transitions and signal organisation, while demanding combinations in live performance still need independent assessment.
